Hot Honey Haloumi
I've always wanted to try Haloumi cheese but never was able to find it at any grocery store near me. Until recently! I went to one of the local Mediterranian restaurants, Alladin, that also conveniently has a Mediterranian grocery store attached to it. I immediately searched for haloumi cheese, they had it! I grabbed that and some other spices, nuts, and chickpeas as well.
The only way I had ever seen anyone make haloumi cheese was pan-seared with honey and herbs, so I did a similar take but with lemon and red chili flakes. I treated it like tofu, drying it off after cutting it into blocks, then seasoning it to let it marinate for a few hours before I cooking it.
Ingredients
-
1 block of haloumi cheese
-
Juice of 1 lemon
-
1 TBS of honey
-
1/2 Tsp red pepper flakes
-
1 Tsp Fresh Oregano
-
1/2 Tsp Kabseh Spice (ingredients in photo below)

Directions
-
Start by slicing your Haloumi cheese in to 1/4 inch thick slice and pat it dry on both sides.
-
In a bowl or container (that can be sealed later for marinating) combine the cheese and all of the ingredients. Make sure that all of the cheese is covered in the sauce.
-
Store in the fridge for at least 30 mins but the longer the better.
-
After marinated, heat pan to medium/high heat and place all slices down for 2/3 minutes or until golden brown. Flip and repeat on the other side.
-
After cooked, place cheese on plate and pour remaining sauce on the cheese to serve.
